Pathologist at the Quebec Heart and Lung Institute IUCPQ, University of Laval 

Dr Patrice Desmeules is an anatomic and molecular pathologist at IUCPQ/Quebec Heart and Lung Institute since 2017. He trained in anatomic pathology at Université Laval followed by fellowships at the NY-Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in oncologic surgical and thoracic molecular pathology.  Dr Desmeules interests are focused on translational research and biomarkers in thoracic neoplasms.

Dr Thibault de La Motte Rouge 

Thibault de La Motte Rouge, M.D., Ph.D., praticien spécialiste en oncologie médicale au Centre Eugène Marquis, Rennes, France  

Ancien président de l'Association des internes en oncologie (AERIO) en France, Thibault de la Motte Rouge a ensuite suivi un parcours académique en oncologie médicale à Gustave Roussy (Villejuif), à l’hôpital de la Pitié Salpetrière (Paris), puis à l’Institut Curie (Saint-Cloud). Il a également une acquis une expertise en Recherche et Développement du médicament au sein de l’industrie pharmaceutique (Roche, Basel, Suisse), en supervisant la mise en place d’une étude de phase III et en participant à l’enregistrement d’un médicament auprès de la FDA et l’EMA.  

 Depuis 2015, Thibault de la Motte Rouge a rejoint le Centre Eugène Marquis (Rennes) en Bretagne. Ces principaux domaines d’intérêt sont les cancers féminins (gynécologiques et sein) et l’analyse moléculaire des cancers pour développer la médecine de précision en oncologie.  

Il fait partie du conseil scientifique du Groupe d'Investigateurs Nationaux pour les Etudes des Cancers de l'Ovaire (GINECO), participe au comité scientifique et stratégique en cancer du sein (CS3) au sein de l’intergroupe UCBG pour les cancers du sein. Il est membre du comité de pilotage (COPIL) du réseau labellisé par l’Institut National du Cancer (INCa) « tumeurs rares gynécologique (TMRG) » et est responsable du référentiel « tumeurs germinales de l’ovaire ». Il collabore activement avec le centre de référence des maladies trophoblastiques. En tant qu’expert auprès de l’INCa, il a participé à la rédaction des référentiels de prise en charge et la mise au point des indicateurs qualité (IQSS) dans les cancers de l’ovaire. Il fait partie du comité d’organisation du congrès de la Société Français de Médecine Prédictive et Personnalisée (SFMPP).  

Il est très impliqué en recherche clinique, aussi bien pour des phases précoces au sein du CLIPP² à Rennes que pour des études de phase III, en tant que membre de comité de supervision de certains essais dans les cancers gynécologiques et du sein. Il est aussi investi dans la recherche translationnelle, ayant obtenu un Doctorat ès Sciences (Université Rennes 1) avec une collaboration au sein de l’unité INSERM U1242 OSS pour faire progresser la recherche dans les cancers du sein triple négatif et les cancers de l’ovaire. Il est responsable du programme national GREAT (Genomic BRCA and Extensive ovArian cancer Testing) qui vise à constituer une base clinico-biologique de patientes atteintes de cancer de l’ovaire.

Dr. Sommer ist Funktionsoberarzt und arbeitet im Institut für Pathologie des Universitätsklinikums Carl Gustav Carus in Dresden. Er studierte Medizin an der Technischen Universität Dresden und absolvierte seine Facharztausbildung am Institut für Pathologie der Universitätsklinikum Dresden. Seine diagnostischen Spezialgebiete sind die Uropathologie und die Molekularpathologie.  

Des Weiteren ist er Chief Medical Advisor des jungen Technologie Unternehmen asgen GmbH & Co KG welche bioinformatischen Pipelines und KI-basierte Anwendungen für automatisiere Forschung und Routine Anwendungen entwickelt.

Le Pr RAY COQUARD est actuellement coordonnateur du réseau national dédié au diagnostic et à la gestion des cancers gynécologiques rares (www.ovaire-rare.org), un réseau soutenu et labélisé  par l’INCA.  

Elle est présidente du groupe coopérateur GINECO depuis 2018. Depuis 2002, elle développe également une recherche translationnelle dédiée au cancer de l’ovaire avec l’INSERM au sein du CRCL dirigé par Christophe CAUX et Alain VIARI au sein du campus CLB, et plus directement une recherche dédiée à la biologie des cancers gynécologiques rares (Carcinosarcome, Tumeurs à cellules de Granulosa…). 

De 2009 à 2018, elle a présidé le groupe de travail sur les cancers rares du GCIG (intergroupe cancer gynécologique) dédié aux essais cliniques dans le domaine de tous les cancers gynécologiques rares.  

Elle est membre actif de plusieurs sociétés savantes, dont l’American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), la Société française du cancer, l’EORTC, l’ESO, faculty member de la Société européenne d’oncologie médicale (ESMO) et council member de la société européenne d’oncologie gynécologique (ESGO).

Markus Eckstein

Dr. Eckstein schloss 2015 sein Medizin Studium und 2016 seine Promotion an der Medizinischen Fakultät der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität in Erlangen erfolgreich ab. Seit 2016 ist er Assistenzarzt in der chirurgischen Pathologie am Institut für Pathologie der FAU (Direktor: Prof. Arndt Hartmann), wo er in der allgemeinen Pathologie mit Schwerpunkt Uropathologie ausgebildet wird. Er ist Mitglied der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Pathologie und der Internationalen Akademie für Pathologie (Deutsche Sektion). 

Sein Forschungsschwerpunkt liegt auf der Charakterisierung von Immunphänotypen, Immunevasionsmechanismen und der entscheidenden Rolle von Immun-Checkpoint-Proteinen bei muskelinvasivem Blasenkrebs. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt ist die diagnostische Bewertung von PD-L1 bei verschiedenen Krebsarten, insbesondere Blasenkrebs und Nierenzellkrebs. Dr. Eckstein wurde im Jahr 2021 von der CE Alken Stiftung für seine Arbeit „Bladder Tumor Subtype Commitment Occurs in Carcinoma in situ Driven by Key Signaling Pathways Including ECM Remodeling “ vom Stiftungsrat zum C. E. Alken-Preisträger 2022 gewählt.

Florian Länger

Dr. Länger ist seit 2001 Oberarzt am Institut für Pathologie der Medizinischen Hochschule Hannover, wo er 2006 zum Qualitätsmanagementbeauftragten des Instituts für Pathologie ernannt wurde. Seit 2008 ist er Leiter der Arbeitsgruppe Lungenpathologie am gleichen Institut. 2018 und 2021 übernahm er jeweils die Verantwortung der molekularen Diagnostik des Lungenkrebszentrum der MHH und der Molekulare Diagnostik ASV des AKH Celle.  Neben seiner ärztlichen Tätigkeit ist er ein Gründungs- und Vorstandsmitglied der AG Thoraxpathologie der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Pathologie, ein Mitglied in vielfältigen nationaler und internationaler Fachgesellschaften (u.a. Deutschen Gesellschaft für Pathologie, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Hämatologie und Onkologie und der European Society of Medical Oncology) und der Arbeitsgemeinschaft Knochentumoren e.V.. Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen unter anderen in der morphologischen und molekularen Charakterisierung des nicht-kleinzelligen Bronchialkarzinoms. Darüber hinaus ist er seit 2010 als Referenzpathologe im Referenzzentrum Nord des Mammografie-Screenings tätigt und betreut mehrere DFG-geförderte Forschungsprojekte zum Thema Fibrosierende Lungenerkrankungen.

• Precision medicine drugs cost $1bn less to develop than traditional drugs, mainly due to smaller clinical trials and the accelerated path to the market
• Historically precision medicine sales have averaged $5.2bn over the lifetime of the drug, considerably less than non-precision medicine oncology therapies
• The authors note that the precision medicine revenues are significantly constrained because of inefficiencies in the diagnostic pathway denying the drugs access to 64% of potentially eligible patients 
• Recommendations include moving towards a precision oncology CDx-guided approach which can deliver health benefits at a potentially affordable cost, including in the development phase, lowering expensive clinical trial attrition rates, and sparing unselected patients those treatments that are ineffective and may have significant side effects
